What do you do with old looking bananas? Save those bananas from the trash, blend them and make ice cubes. It is super easy to do to prepare your smoothies. First, blend bananas and cacao powder. You can also add almond milk or regular milk, and that’s it.
The next morning you have this banana mixture in ice cubes. Get them out and blend with some more ice. The smoothie will be icy and thick and it will have the consistency of a creamy ice cream smoothie. It will be so refreshing.
If you love chocolate, this is for you. After you blend, give it a taste and see if you need to add more cacao powder. I use the rich Cacao powder from Navitas. You could skip adding the almond milk to make the ice cubes and add it later when making your smoothies. It is up to you. I have done it both ways but I prefer the mixture of bananas, cacao powder, and milk to make them into ice cubes.
As you can see, I wasn’t fast enough to take the photo below, and the ice cubes were melting. It was soo hot outside. This is perfect for the summer months.
This is really not a recipe but an idea for you to save bananas from going to the trash. However, I am still giving you my measurements of how much bananas per cacao powder for you to play with the flavors.
I like bananas when they are firm but once they get ripe or overripe, I have to save them from throwing the bananas away. And, by using some simple meal prep ideas like this one, you can practice zero food waste. Remember, zero waste means saving money.

Another great way to save money is to freeze your fruits. Freeze your fruits flat on a pan and then store in plastic bags or blend them as I did here to make ice cubes. There is nothing new here, just a reminder to use everything you buy.
Banana Cocoa Powder Smoothie
- 3 bananas, ripe
- 2 tsp cacao powder
- 1 cup almond milk, sweetened, vanilla flavor
Ice cubes for the smoothie the next day
- 1 cup ice
- Blend all ingredients and place in ice cubes.
- When ready to make a smoothie, place your banana cocoa powder ice cubes in a blender with one cup of ice. Blend until smooth and it is ready.
